*NEW* BPHA COVID Policy Manual

BPHA Pool Admission Standards

  • Children under the age of 9 must be supervised by a caregiver who is 13 years or older while on Recreation Centre property, with the exception of staff-supervised events. Children 9 and older are permitted to be at the Recreation Centre unaccompanied, provided they have successfully completed the BPHA Swim Test.

  • The BPHA Swim Test requires children to swim one length of the pool on their front without touching the bottom of the pool, with the ability to put their face in the water and keep their feet at the surface. Successful completion of the swim test is determined by a lifeguard on duty. Children may only attempt the swim test once per day.

  • Children who have passed the swim test are permitted to swim unaccompanied.

  • Children who have not passed the swim test must be accompanied in the water by a caregiver (13 or older) who is responsible for their direct supervision.

  • Direct supervision is defined as being within arm’s reach and able to provide immediate assistance.

  • A caregiver may provide direct supervision to a maximum of two children. This supervision ratio can be exceeded if one or more of the non-swimmers is wearing a Canadian-approved lifejacket.

These requirements are in response to recommendations from the Chief Coroner of Ontario.

Pool Rules

All members and their guests must comply with the following rules at all times:

  • Members and their guests must sign in for each visit. Guests are permitted only when a member who remains present for the duration of the visit accompanies them. See Guest Policy.

  • Swimmers must shower before entering the water and comply with all Ontario Public Health Act and Regulations, which are posted at the Recreation Centre.

  • Instructions from BPHA lifeguard staff must be complied with. One long whistle blast means ‘emergency’; everyone must clear the pool area immediately and in an orderly fashion.

  • Pets and bikes must be left outside the front gate. Skateboards, roller blades and other wheeled recreational devices are not permitted in the pool area. No running on deck.

  • Please leave the facility tidy; trash, compost and recycling should be carefully disposed of in the proper bins. No glass containers are permitted on the pool deck.
